Disclaimer
Foodlarder shares food storage and cooking experience from a home kitchen. Please read this before relying on anything published here.
General information only
The content on foodlarder.com, including posts, guides, recipes, photographs, emails and replies to reader questions, is published for general information and education. It is not professional advice, and it is not a substitute for guidance from a qualified food safety specialist, doctor, registered dietitian or other professional who knows your situation.
Where we test a method, we do so in an ordinary home kitchen. Where a post touches on food safety, we check it against guidance from sources such as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That checking does not mean those agencies, or any other organisation, endorse Foodlarder.
Food safety
Whether food is safe depends on things we cannot see or control: how it was produced and handled before it reached you, the temperature of your fridge, freezer and kitchen, humidity, the containers you use, how long food sat out, and more. Storage times and shelf life figures on this site are estimates based on published guidance and, where a page says so, our own testing. They are not guarantees.
When in doubt, throw it out. Do not taste food to check whether it has gone bad. Many harmful bacteria do not change how food looks, smells or tastes.
Follow official guidance for your country. In the United States, see FoodSafety.gov, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and the FDA.
Home canning, fermenting, curing, infusing oils and vacuum sealing carry a risk of botulism and other serious illness when done incorrectly. Use only tested, research-based procedures, such as those from the National Center for Home Food Preservation, and do not change ingredients, quantities, acidity or processing times.
Some people are at higher risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant people, young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system. They should take extra care and follow their healthcare provider’s advice.
If you think you or someone else has food poisoning, contact a doctor. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Recipes, allergies and nutrition
Allergies. Always check ingredient labels. Recipes may contain, or come into contact with, common allergens such as milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy and sesame. We cannot guarantee that any recipe is free from a particular allergen.
Nutrition. Any nutrition information is an estimate and will vary with brands, portion sizes and substitutions. Do not rely on it for a medical diet.
Results. Results depend on your ingredients, equipment, altitude, climate and technique, so yours may differ from ours.
Kitchen safety. Take care with knives, heat, hot oil, pressure cookers and glass jars, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for appliances.
Accuracy and corrections
We check safety claims against published guidance, but information can be incomplete, go out of date or contain errors, and food safety guidance itself changes over time. We make no guarantee that any content is complete, accurate or current.
If you spot a mistake, please tell us at info@foodlarder.com. When we correct a post, we note what changed and when.
Affiliate links, advertising and sponsored content
Foodlarder is free to read. To pay for it, we may earn money in the ways below. In line with the US Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on endorsements, we tell you when a post has a financial connection.
Affiliate links. Some links to products are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Posts that contain affiliate links say so near the top.
Amazon Associates. Where posts contain Amazon links, Foodlarder takes part in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate, Foodlarder earns from qualifying purchases.
Advertising. The site may show ads from networks such as Google AdSense, Mediavine or Raptive. We do not choose individual ads, and an ad appearing on Foodlarder is not an endorsement.
Sponsored posts and gifted products. If a brand pays for a post or gives us a product, the post is clearly labelled at the top. Sponsors do not get to approve our conclusions, and payment never buys a positive review.
Prices and availability change often. Check the retailer’s website before you buy. Product names, logos and brands belong to their owners, and mentioning them does not mean those owners endorse Foodlarder.
Links to other websites
Posts link to other websites for sources, products and further reading. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, products or practices.
