About 12 months
Quality fades, but sugar keeps bacteria out
3 to 4 days
In the fridge after baking
A day to a week
Depending on the weather
The short version: keep Halloween candy airtight in a cool, dry place and it holds its quality for about a year. Pumpkin pie goes in the fridge for 3 to 4 days, while party food gets 2 hours out before it has to be chilled or thrown away. A carved pumpkin is decoration, not dinner.

How long does Halloween candy last?
Halloween candy lasts about a year. According to Christine Venema, a food safety educator with Michigan State University Extension, candy "really does not have a food safety issue. It is a quality issue." That is because its high sugar content does not support foodborne bacteria.
The makers' own numbers say the same. In the same MSU piece, a Hershey's spokesman put chocolate at good quality for about 12 months, and a gummy maker gave up to 12 months after the manufacture date. Candy with nuts is the exception, since the fat in the nuts slowly goes rancid.
How to store Halloween candy
Venema's advice is simple: keep candy in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Humidity is the main enemy, because it turns gummies sticky and hard candy into what MSU calls "a sticky mess." Sunlight, meanwhile, fades the colors and softens gummies, so a dark cupboard beats a bowl by the window.
Can you freeze Halloween candy?
Yes. Freezing may extend its shelf life by months, according to MSU, as long as it goes into a moisture-vapor-proof container or freezer bag. Otherwise, unwrapped candy picks up freezer odors, flavors and moisture.
When to throw Halloween candy out
Venema told Michigan Public to throw away candy with a torn or open wrapper, anything that has got wet, and anything that does not look right. By contrast, a white powdery coating on old chocolate is a quality change, not a reason to bin it.
How long does pumpkin pie last?
A baked pumpkin pie lasts 3 to 4 days in the fridge, according to the FoodSafety.gov cold food storage chart. In the freezer, it keeps for 1 to 2 months after baking.
Because the chart lists it with refrigerated foods, a pumpkin pie should not spend the evening on the dessert table. The USDA's Danger Zone rule gives perishable food 2 hours between 40 and 140°F, so cover what is left and chill it once the party winds down.
How long does a carved pumpkin last?
A carved pumpkin may last from a day to a week, depending on the weather, according to University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension. Carving opens the flesh, so it dries out and collapses far faster than a whole pumpkin.
How to make a carved pumpkin last longer
Arkansas Extension suggests two things. First, coat every cut surface, inside included, with olive or another vegetable oil, which acts as a barrier to drying out. Second, keep the jack-o'-lantern in the shade to slow it down. It also helps to start with a pumpkin that has hard flesh and no soft spots, cuts or bruises.
Can you eat a carved pumpkin?
No. LeeAnn Blevins of Arkansas Extension says it is not recommended to eat jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, although the seeds can be roasted. Likewise, Odessa Keenan of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension warns that once pulp has been left out for more than a couple of hours, "you can assume it's not good to eat." So if you want the seeds or pulp, refrigerate or cook them as soon as you scoop them out.
For pumpkin you plan to cook, the pumpkin guide covers curing, storing it whole at 50 to 55°F and freezing the puree.
Party food left out: the 2-hour rule
Party food follows the USDA Danger Zone rule: perishable food should not sit between 40 and 140°F for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. So a buffet that runs all evening needs its dips, meat and cheese swapped out, rather than topped up.
Once the party ends, the USDA's leftovers guidance is to refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours. From there, cooked meat and pizza keep 3 to 4 days in the fridge, according to the FoodSafety.gov chart. Anything that sat out all night is a different question, and the food left out overnight list sorts it food by food.
Cider, caramel and baked treats

Caramel apples are the one to watch. A Penn State food safety specialist puts their limit at about two hours out, and Iowa State University Extension gives them up to a week in the fridge after that. The caramel sauce guide explains why the stick makes the difference.

Common questions about Halloween leftovers
Is Halloween candy from last year safe to eat?
Usually, yes. MSU Extension says candy is a quality issue rather than a safety one, so year-old candy may taste stale but is unlikely to make anyone sick. Still, throw out anything with an open wrapper, anything that got wet, or anything that looks wrong.
Does pumpkin pie need to be refrigerated?
Yes. FoodSafety.gov lists baked pumpkin pie at 3 to 4 days in the fridge, so it should go in within 2 hours, like other perishable food.
Can you cook a pumpkin after carving it?
Not one that has been on display. Arkansas Extension does not recommend eating jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, so cook a fresh pumpkin instead, and use the seeds or pulp right after carving.
